<p>When Ian Harkes</a> signed with D.C. United this winter, the highly-touted rookie wasn’t simply joining his hometown team – he was joining a club where his father is an institution.</p><p>US Soccer legend John Harkes</a> was one of MLS’ biggest stars in the league’s early years, leaving the English Premier League to sign with D.C. ahead of the inaugural season of 1996. He had instant success with United, captaining the club to the MLS Cup and US Open Cup titles in his first season and leading them to another MLS Cup win in 1997.</p><p>Now, his 22-year-old son Ian is looking to make a name for himself with United.
